Abras
A pleasant way to cross the Dubai Creek is by abra which is a small ferry and can be found along the Creek on both the Bur Dubai and Deira sides. Abras run 24/7 and are very regular. There are two routes one from Deira Old Souk Abra station (which is adjacent to the spice souk entrance) to Bur Dubai Abra Station at the north end of the textile souk. The other route is from Al Sabkha Abra Station at the southern end of the Dhow Wharfage in Deira to the Bur Dubai Old Souk Abra Station in the middle of the textile souk.
Dubai bus
Dubai has a cheap bus service but is not often used by tourists. The main bus stations are at the Gold Souq Market and Bur Dubai bus station. One useful bus is the number 8 or 8A that runs from the Gold Souk station to Al Ghubaiba and go south down Jumeirah Road to the Burj Al Arab and on to the Dubai Marina. Buy your tickets on the bus. Buses also travel to Abu Dhabi and is the E1 Service and takes two hours and very economical.
Big Bus Company
An easy way to travel around is the hop on hop off Big Bus tour. There is a Dubai City Tour and Dubai Beach Tour. The Dubai city tour starts at Wafi City. The Dubai beach tour starts at Deira City Centre and the last stop is the Mall of the Emirates.
Dubai driving
Renting a car is easy and can be done with or without a driver. Driving during morning and afternoon peak hours is slow. There is zero tolerance for alcohol. Speed limits are generally 60 to 80km/hr in urban areas and 100 or 120 on major highways.
Dubai taxi
Taxis are reasonably priced and are metered. From the airport, there is an increased standing charge. If your taxi driver is going too fast ask them to slow down. Water Bus
Water buses run on four routes. Route 1 goes from Sabkha Abra Station to Bur Dubai Abra Station; Route 2 goes from Baniyas Station to the Dubai Old Souq Abra Station; Route 3 starts at Sabkha Abra Station and ends at Al Seef Street and route 4 goes from Baniyas station to Al Seef Station.
Dubai Metro
All set to open in September 2009 and consists of two lines and serving 90 stations. The Red Line runs from the airport to the city centre and then down the coast to Dubai Marina and Jebel Ali. The Green line runs in a loop around the city through Bur Dubai and via Deira to the airport. Over future years more lines will be opened.
